The Black Diamond Frontpoint Gaiter (GTX) is a full length, tight fitting gaiter and, as the name would suggest, designed with ice climbing in mind. As my main winter pursuit is snow, ice and mixed climbing, I thought these would be a good choice for me.

Aimed at the higher end user, the Neutrino Endurance is designed to tackle all but the most heinous winter conditions – think Scottish winters, year-round Alpine use, and serious ascents up to 6500m.

The excellent Neutrino Edge jacket has, in my opinion, not been as well received as it probably should have, due to one major factor – branding.

The exercises provided below have been chosen from a vast array of numerous routines available as those most specific to rock climbing. They are designed to enhance and maintain the physical attributes and strength of both your hands and fingers as well as the general health and athleticism of your mitts.

These days I’m more worried about whether my beer gut digs into the waist band, are they comfortable sat in front of a computer all day or even do they give you enough freedom of movement for climbing.

I have worn this jacket as a general shell in varying conditions from plowing though driving rain on Scafell to ski touring through gusting (40mph) snow whilst linking in from Pointe Helbronner to the Vallee Blanche in the Alps, and whilst the insulation is obviously limited the breathabilty, maneuverability and barrier protection is (in it’s class) second to none!

The first thing to note is that I have only one top and one pair of bottoms. Even after three-week trips they hardly smell at all and continue to perform well. The ability of merino wool garments to effectively deal with perspiration is unparalleled in my experience.
