Core Climbing: holds review

Core Climbing is a relatively new hold designer and manufacturer, formed by three keen climbers, all of whom have served an apprenticeship with various long established climbing hold manufacturers. The company is based near Sheffield...

Outdoor Research Drycomp Vertex

I really like this sack. It rails against the over design for the sake change that ruins many a good product and as such it appeals to my values of keeping design simple and effective. I’m looking forward to using the sack for long distance Munro bagging trips in the hills this spring

Grivel Steel Blade Shovel

This shovel appealed to me because it is so light. At 400g it’s lighter than any alloy shovel. Plastic shovels are generally a waste of time in the hills but the addition of a steel blade on the cutting edge of this shovel makes it a consideration.

Contour Elliptic Compact Poles

When the heavy snow arrived in December I packed up my nice light Grivel Trail poles and looked for a sturdier pole that could cope with deep snow, a heavy rucksack, skiing and generally, lots of punishment in the winter hills.

Wild Country Touchdown

Despite the fact that bouldering crash pads have become a staple product – often for kudos and advertisement reasons, rather than actual profitability – for most climbing hardware and software manufacturers over the last few years, Wild Country have until now remained out of the fray.

Red Chili Crag Sack

A recent addition to the Red Chili range of climbing accessories is the new Crag Sack. I have been testing this rucksack come holdall for the past month or so, and the following is a review of how I found the pack in use, as well as how it compares to the competition.

Kayland Apex Trek

The Apex Trek is a 4 season mountaineering boot with a target use range from winter hill walking to easy snow and ice routes. In practical terms this means year round UK mountain walking with an emphasis on winter hill walking, Munro bagging, classic ridges, and gullies.

Grivel Trail Pole

With a decent dump of snow in the Cairngorms my first trip out with the poles was (predictably), up into Coire an t-Sneachda and back by Fiacaill a Choire Chas via the Goat Track.

Belay Device Guide

With the vast number of belay devices now available on the market, we thought it may be helpful for us to outline each device that we stock and give a brief summary of what each unit is designed for, how it works and what it is and is not suitable for.

Snow Shovel Guide

Once seen as a novelty item of the "gear head", or point of interest in some technical outdoor stores – in Britain at least – the snow shovel has in recent years become a staple winter product for all the UK’s mountaineering and ski-touring specialist retailers.
